Working Together with Parents and Carers

When supporting children and young people in therapy, I believe it is essential to work in partnership with their parents and carers. You know your child better than anyone, and your insights, experiences and hopes are an invaluable part of the therapeutic process.

I aim to offer parents and carers a welcoming, comfortable and non-judgemental space where you can speak openly about your child, explore your concerns, share your wishes and feel genuinely heard.

During our initial consultation, we will take time to build a picture of your child's world. Together we will explore how you see your child, how your relationship has grown and changed over time, and any important aspects of family life that may help me understand their experience. We may talk about your child's early development, education, relationships, interests, strengths, support network, significant life events, and any memories or family stories that you feel are important for me to know.

This first meeting is also an opportunity to discuss the practical aspects of therapy. We will complete the necessary paperwork, talk about what brings you to therapy at this point, and begin to identify some shared hopes and goals for the process. As therapy develops, I will also work collaboratively with your child or young person to understand what they would like to gain from our sessions.

As therapy progresses, we will arrange review meetings to reflect on how things are evolving. While your child's therapy remains confidential, these conversations provide an opportunity to discuss themes that may be emerging, any changes you have noticed at home or school, and any questions or concerns you may have. Sometimes these meetings are also a valuable space for parents to reflect on new challenges within the family or to think together about the best ways to support their child.

Parent and carer consultations are an important part of the therapeutic journey. They allow us to build a trusting relationship, share observations, celebrate progress and think together about how best to support your child. These meetings also help us decide whether art psychotherapy feels like the right approach, whether this is the right time for therapy.

I am always happy to answer any questions you may have about art psychotherapy, explain how I work, and share more about my experience supporting children, young people and their families through creative therapeutic practice.
